One convenient way to square a 2-digit number is by setting that number equidistantly between two numbers that can be more easily multiplied.     ex.   43×43=1849

-Find a number near the number being squared that can be more easily multiplied. A multiple of 10 is usually most handy.     ex.   40 is easier to multiply than 43

-On the opposite side of the number being squared find a number such that the number being squared is now equidistant between these chosen far numbers.      ex.   46 and 40 are equidistant from 43

-Multiply together the two far numbers equidistant from the number being squared.                           ex. 40×46=1840

-To this product add the square of the distance from the far numbers to the middle.                            ex.   The distance from the far numbers to the middle in this case is 3, and squaring this is 3×3=9.  Add this to the product of the far numbers for the answer: 1840+9=1849

Try these:    62×62=3844      97×97=9409      34×34=1156      24×24=576      54×54=2916
